It comes from Psalm 82, verses 3 and 4, in the Bible: “Give justice to the weak and fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”

There are four directives in these two verses: give, maintain, rescue, and deliver. These are very good things to do! Who doesn’t want to help people who are in need? Yet, do we ever stop and consider why we should help? Is it simply a command to be obeyed so we can feel good about what we do, or is this tied to something greater than ourselves?

Psalm 82, and the whole Bible, is primarily about God. Those two simple verses show us who God is. God is just, so he is a father to the fatherless, compassionate to the weak, merciful to the needy, and good to all.

God especially cares for those relegated to the fringes of society. God has eyes for the outcasts. God remembers the forgotten. When we help those who cannot help themselves we reflect something of the heart of God.

P82 exists to help the helpless. Why? Because God first helped us. The apostle Paul said, “For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:6-8) This is the heart and message of who we are and what we do. This is why we want to help.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”2_5″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_image src=”https://p82homes.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/rxfcjgqw_b8.jpg” title_text=”Photo by Joel Muniz” _builder_version=”4.14.8″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ border_radii=”on|12px|12px|12px|12px” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” alt=”person holding book” sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.
